About Us

The Sand Box

The creators of The Sand Box are members of Gideon Productions, a small theater company that has been producing new plays in NYC since 2000.  For the past few years, we had been building our sets in a live/work space rented by Sandy Yaklin, our set designer, and Mac Rogers, our resident playwright.  They needed to move, and given the high price of real estate in NYC, that meant looking at “creative” options.

Gideon Productions had recently partnered with Boomerang Theatre Company and Flux Theatre Ensemble to form “BFG” and collectively rent the Secret Theatre in Queens.  We reached out to them and others about sharing a storage, shop & rehearsal space.  The result is a unique resource in Queens, not just for these companies, but for other independent theater and film companies as well.

The Green Part

We hate throwing stuff away!  Right now we can only store a limited amount of set pieces and props, but we hope to expand.  In the meanwhile, we’ve started the Shared Independent Theater List (a.k.a. the Sh.I.T. List), a website that companies and artists can use to sell/rent/barter/give away their set pieces, furniture, props, costumes and other goods.  The wonderful LIT Fund has generously given us a grant to underwrite and continue the project, so go to shit-list.biz!  You can also check out our video about the Sh.I.T.
